The Magical Hydrangea

Not many people talk about the magical properties of the hydrangea. According to folklore, if a (bad) witch put a curse on an unlucky man or woman the hydrangea could be used to break the curse.

In general the hydrangea stands for friendship, devotion, and understanding.

Hydrangea is also used medicinally. Native Americans used the root as a diuretic and detoxifier. The bark of the hydrangea was used to ease muscle sprains and burns. It is still used today in alternative medicine as a tonic herb.

I cut these from my girlfriend's garden yesterday. The colors are magnificent...or should I say magical? :) I'm going to dry the petals to use later.

I am going to bundle some of my sage today to make a smudge stick. I'll let you guys see when I'm done. :)

  7. They really are the most gorgeous colours! I've always loved them, but our soil is not acidic enough here, and so they are rarely blue or purple - always white/green/pink.

  8. Great article. I love that when you you stick enough rusting stuff in the soil it will turn the flowers the varigated colors, particularly the blues!!

  10. The Hydrangea: Queen of the Billowing Mophead Blooms! Your Highness, I bow to thee! Your flowers in shades of white, pink and blue waving on stems like so many magic wands --most honestly, what more could one ask for in a shrub?!

  12. Oh how I wish my hydrangeas looked like the photo you posted....those are gorgeous. The high temperatures have taken all the life out of mine and they had more blooms this year than I have ever seen. Saw your blog on the list over at the Practical Magic party coming up and thought I would do a fly by. :) Come and visit when you can. The door is always open. :) Lynn@thevintagenest
